When we compare numbers we are looking at the value of the two in order to say something about them.
The things we can say are:
  • The first number is less than the second number. We show that with the less than symbol (< ).
  • The first number is greater than the second number. We show that with the greater than symbol (>).
  • The first number is equal to the second number. We show that with the equal sign (=).
When we compare regular numbers that are written in standard form we can use the following rules:
  • The number with digits in the highest place value is the biggest.
  • If the numbers have the same place value then the one with the highest numbers in the place values from left to right is the biggest.
Comparing numbers with the same amount of numbers.
You put greatest number in the alligator mouth, so the alligator is eating it.
